Baby, You're A Rich Man

"Baby, You're a Rich Man" is a John Lennon/Paul McCartney song on the B-side of the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" single. While "All You Need is Love" went to No. 1 just about everywhere, "Baby, You're a Rich Man" held up its side by charting at No. 34 in the United States Billboard Hot 100. The song is included on the "Magical Mystery Tour" album and the 1968 "Yellow Submarine" animated film.

The song was a true collaboration between John Lennon and Paul McCartney. John had an unfinished song he had been working on called "One of the Beautiful People," but had trouble polishing it off. He visited Paul at the latter's Cavendish house, and Paul helped John to finish it by adding the "Baby, you're a rich man" chorus.

Devoted Beatles fans - I know you're out there - will only look at the title of this song and say, "Ah, he made a mistake putting that song on a McCartney site, that's a John song." True enough, for the most part. John Lennon originated the composition and it is a "John" song, so he deserves credit. However, this blog is "everything" Paul McCartney, and his bass line and composing contributions make "Baby, You're a Rich Man" go. Remember, these were the days before it was common to have any kind of heavy emphasis on the bass line, so simply by being the best bass player of his time, Paul helped shape the future direction of rock.

McCartney in recent years has tried to "reclaim" songs to which he contributed, and "Baby, You're a Rich Man" is a classic case of Paul's efforts going unrecognized for far too long. Over time, "Baby, You're a Rich Man" has increased in popularity and now sometimes makes "Best of" lists both for the Beatles and for music in general.
