Brown Eyed Handsome Man

The Paul McCartney music video for "Brown Eyed Handsome Man."

"Brown Eyed Handsome Man" was the B side to the "No Other Baby" single off of Paul McCartney's 1999 oldies album "Run Devil Run." For some reason, Paul decided to make a video for this B-side track (the A-side was "No Other Baby," though some would term this a double A-side single). Hey, he's Paul McCartney, he can make videos of anything that he wants. McCartney's music video for "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" is an interesting dance video showing people of different backgrounds simply dancing to the tune. It seems to borrow an aesthetic from Elvis Presley homage videos, but that is perhaps reading too much into it.

"Brown Eyed Handsome Man" was written by Chuck Berry and originally released in September 1956. The individual Beatles were coming of age at that time, and they developed a lifelong affinity for the music of that era. Chuck Berry was their idol, and the Beatles performed with him early in their career. They also used Berry's music. In fact, Paul McCartney has said that the Beatles basically would not have existed without Chuck Berry:
From the first minute we heard the great guitar intro to ‘Sweet Little Sixteen,’ we became fans of the great Chuck Berry. His stories were more like poems than lyrics—the likes of ‘Johnny B. Goode’ or ‘Maybellene.’ To us he was a magician making music that was exotic yet normal at the same time. We learnt so many things from him which led us into a dream world of rock ‘n’ roll music.
So, Paul McCartney playing a Chuck Berry was more than just creating a record, it was an homage.
