C Moon

"C Moon" is a Paul McCartney and Wings song which was the B-side to "Hi Hi Hi" in 1972. The BBC banned "Hi Hi Hi" in the United Kingdom due to its supposed drug references, so "C Moon" carried the ball for the single there. The single was top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic, hitting No. 10 in the United States and No. 5 in the United Kingdom. After an indifferent start for Wings, the "Hi Hi Hi/C Moon single began a string of hits for Wings that only ended with the band's dissolution in 1981. With a reggae beat, "C Moon" continues the breakthrough that Paul McCartney began with the Beatles in "Ob-la-di-ob-la-da."

Paul McCartney took the name "C Moon," recorded in November 1972, from the lyrics of the Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs song "Wooly Bully." Paul has said:
There’s a line in [Wooly Bully] that says, ‘Let’s not be L7.’ Well, L7, it was explained at the time, means a square—put L and 7 together and you get a square… So I thought of the idea of putting a C and a moon together (a half-moon) to get the opposite of a square. So ‘C Moon’ means cool, in other words.
Well, whatever you say, Paul, you're the musical genius. There is a bit of an "in-joke" in the music video, with guitarist Henry McCullough playing drums, guitarist Denny Laine playing bass, and drummer Denny Seiwell playing the xylophone.

"C Moon" is a fairly rare McCartney song that has a heavy trumpet backing and a reggae sound. Even though it was a B-side, the "A" side was banned by the BBC, so the single was carried on radio by the B-side song. People obviously liked this song, too, and there was a missed cue in the recording session that made it into the final released version. While supposedly a "B" side, the song's performance in the UK earned it a spot on Paul's 1987 compilation album, "All The Best." It also made it onto the remastered version of "Red Rose Speedway," though it wasn't originally on that album.

C moon, C moon, C moon is she
C moon, C moon, C moon to me

How come no one older than me
Ever seems to understand the things I want to do?
It will be L seven and I'd never get to heaven
If I filled my head with glue
What's it all to you?

C moon, C moon, C moon is she
C moon, C moon, C moon to me

Bobby lived with Patty but they never
told her daddy
What their love was all about
She could tell her lover that he thought but
She never was the type to let it out
What's it all about?

C moon, C moon, oh, C moon are we
I said, C moon, C moon, C moon are we

How come no one older than me
Ever seems to understand the things I want to do?
It will be L seven and I'd never get to heaven
If I filled my head with glue
What's it all to you?

C moon, C moon, C moon is she
C moon, C moon, C moon to me

Bobby lived with Patty but they never told
her daddy
What their love was all about
She could tell her lover that he thought but
She never wanted to let it out
What's it all about?

C moon, C moon, C moon are we
C moon, C moon, C moon are we
C moon are we…
