"I Want To Hold Your Hand" was the Beatles' big hit in their early years. Released as a single with "This Boy" in the United Kingdom and with "I Saw Her Standing There" in the United States, it topped charts around the world. With advance sales alone of over a million copies, "I Want To Hold Your Hand" became the Beatles' first Number One hit in the United States and was the true start of the British Invasion.

Paul McCartney has said:
From Me To You was released – a flop in America. She Loves You – a big hit in England, big number one in England – a flop in the USA. Nothing until I Want To Hold Your Hand.
So, Paul McCartney recalls "I Want To Hold Your Hand" as the true turning point in the band's fortunes in the biggest market in the world, the United States.

McCartney also recognizes that his "bossy" nature, which would increasingly assert itself within the Beatles, seemed to begin with "I Want To Hold Your Hand":
I heard tapes recently of me counting in I Wanna [sic] Hold Your Hand, which was our first number one in the States, and I'm being pretty bossy: 'Sssh, Sssh! Clean beginning, c'mon, everyone. One, two. No, c'mon, get it right!' and I can see how that could get on your nerves.
Sometimes it takes a perfectionist to make perfection.

"I Want To Hold Your Hand" also was the first song that the Beatles recorded using four-track taping equipment. It took seventeen takes, an unusually high number for the band at that point in their development, and some rehearsing before that. All that work produced very subtle changes, such as how they enunciated their words, that paid off in the brilliant final product. The Beatles also recorded the flip side of the single, "This Boy," on the same day, 17 October 1963. The single became the Beatles' first Christmas No. 1. They performed it on the Ed Sullivan Show, and no lip-synching there, folks!

Oh yeah I'll tell you something
I think you'll understand
When I say that something
I wanna hold your hand

I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand

Oh please say to me
You'll let me be your man
And please say to me
You'll let me hold your hand

Now let me hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand

And when I touch you I feel happy inside
It's such a feeling that my love
I can't hide, I can't hide, I can't hide

Yeah, you got that something
I think you'll understand
When I say that something
I wanna hold your hand

I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand

And when I touch you I feel happy inside
It's such a feeling that my love
I can't hide, I can't hide, I can't hide

Yeah you, got that something
I think you'll understand
When I feel that something
I wanna hold your hand

I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
