Let Me Roll It

"Let Me Roll It" is a track on Paul McCartney and Wings' 1973 "Band on the Run" Album. It was the flip side of the successful "Jet" sing in 1973, which went to No. 7 in both the United States and Great Britain. Paul obviously loves "Let Me Roll It" because he plays it in live concerts and it appears on several live albums. If you want to hear a live performance by Paul of "Let Me Roll It," just pick up a copy of "Wings over America," "Paul Is Live," "Back in the U.S.," "Back in the World," or "Good Evening New York City." Or just go to one of Paul McCartney's concerts, he's more likely than not to play it.

Paul has said:
[Let Me Roll It] was a riff, originally, a great riff to play, and whenever we played it live, it goes down great. We’d play it on two guitars, and people saw it later as a kind of John pastiche, as Lennon-ish, Lennonesque. Which I don’t mind. That could have been a Beatles song. Me and John would have sung that good.
McCartney also has said:
Let Me Roll It was not really a Lennon pastiche, although my use of tape echo did sound more like John than me. But tape echo was not John’s exclusive territory! And you have to remember that, despite the myth, there was a lot of commonality between us in the way that we thought and the way that we worked.
"Let Me Roll It" is not a Beatles tune, but it certainly would fit nicely on "Abbey Road" next to "Oh! Darling."

When Paul plays "Let Me Roll It" these days, he tends to speed it up just a touch faster than on the album. That's actually a trick that he uses a lot for live performances of some of his Wings songs, such as "Wild Life," which is extremely slow in the studio version. McCartney has said that the vocal "does sound like John... I hadn't realized I'd sung it like John."

"Let Me Roll It" begins at about 5:20 in the below video of Paul McCartney and his band performing on the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City.

You gave me something.
I understand,
You gave me loving in the palm of my hand

I can't tell you how I feel
My heart is like a wheel
LET ME ROLL IT
Let me roll it to you
Let me roll it
Let me roll it to you

I want to tell you
And now's the time
I want to tell you that
You're going to be mine

I can't tell you how I feel
My heart is like a wheel.
LET ME ROLL IT
Let me roll it to you
Let me roll it
Let me roll it to you
