For my money, "The Night Before" is one of the top Beatles tracks of all time, singles included. Why this song doesn't get more acclaim is a mystery. If there is one single underappreciated and worthy song in the entire Beatles canon, it is "The Night Before." Nothing evokes memories of the British Invasion quite like "The Night Before." It's a perfectly crafted pop song with perfect harmonies and perfect musicianship, what else can you ask?

What gets me the most about this song are John Lennon's backup vocals. Don't know why, but I think they are among the best I've ever heard, his voice so distinctive and perfect. Oh, and Paul does a fine job, too. ;) Oh, "The Night Before" is off of "Help!," of course. The Beatles recorded the song on 17 February 1965. John Lennon has this to say:
That's Paul again. I'll just say it's Paul, meaning I don't remember anything about it except it was in the movie Help!
It only took two takes to record "The Night Before," an astonishing feat considering some other tracks took literally dozens of takes. George Harrison and Paul apparently combined on the guitar solo, though there is some controversy over actually played. If Paul's voice sounds a little stronger than usual on "The Night Before," it is because his lead vocals are double-tracked.

For the iconic video, the Beatles went to Salisbury Plain in southern England (not far from Stonehenge). This is part of the film "Help," but stands alone as a prime music video and one of the best the Beatles ever filmed. This is one song that should have been released as a single in major markets but never was, not even as a flip side (it did appear in some secondary markets). Paul did not revisit "The Night Before" until 15 July 2011 at Yankee Stadium, the first time that he had played it, at least publicly, since 25 May 1965 on the BBC.
