"Paperback Writer" was the A-side of the Beatles' eleventh single. Released on 30 May 1966, it went to No. 1 in most major markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, West Germany, and New Zealand. Paul wrote the song on a dare from his aunt to write a song that wasn't about love.

"Paperback Writer" was on the "Yesterday and Today" album in the United States. That was the album with the infamous "Butcher cover" that was recalled and affixed with a new, innocuous cover.

"Paperback Writer" was the Beatles' only US No. 1 single in 1966, topping the charts for two weeks around Frank Sinatra's "Strangers In the Night." The song also is notable for having the background refrain Frère Jacques, which may be a somewhat inside joke about whether fans are really paying attention to lyrics. The flip side was the instrumental "Rain," which many consider an underrated Beatles gem.

The Beatles' engineer, Geoff Emerick, noted:
Paul played a different bass, a Rickenbacker. Then we boosted it further by using a loudspeaker as a microphone. We positioned it directly in front of the bass speaker and the moving diaphragm of the second speaker made the electric current.
The Beatles recorded four different promotional films for "Paperback Writer" on 19 and 20 May 1966. The first, a color performance of the band playing the song at EMI Studios, was shown on the Ed Sullivan Show on 5 June 1966. The most popular of the clips, though, shows the Beatles on the grounds of Chiswick House in west London. The Beatles also lip-synched to the recording on the Top of the Pops show on 16 June 1966, their only appearance on the show - no known recording of that show exists.
