Sing the Changes

Paul McCartney in the "Sing the Changes" video.

"Sing the Changes" is a song on the album "Electric Arguments." Paul sings as "The Fireman" for some reason rather than himself, a trick that he pulls with great regularity. Paul has said that his lyrics as "The Fireman" tend to be just random thoughts, and his videos as The Fireman follow in that tradition. There are lots of beautiful natural images accompanying Paul at his hand-waving best.

Why exactly Paul feels the need to pose as an alter ego for some material is a bit of a mystery. He's been doing it since "Sgt. Pepper," and McCartney likes to reuse his tricks (such as, for instance, reprising some songs in other songs within the same album). While I would not go so far as to say that "Sing the Changes" sounds just like every other McCartney song, it doesn't sound so different as to justify an entirely new identity. In fact, Paul occasionally plays Fireman songs like "Sing the Changes" at his concerts. So, it's not like he's trying to keep it all a mystery. It's a tuneful song and fits nicely within the McCartney oeuvre. Is it Paul's best song? No, it's not "Eleanor Rigby." Is it Paul's worst song? No, it's not "Temporary Secretary." "Sing the Changes" is a good Paul McCartney song, let's leave it at that.

Like the sun playing
In the morning
Feel the quiet
Feel the thunder
Oh every ladder
Leads to heaven
Call it ransom
Draw the picture
Sing the changes
Oh as you're sleeping
Feel the quiet
In the thunder
Sing the changes
Calling over
Feel the quiet
In the thunder

Like the sun playing
In the morning
Feel the quiet
Feel the thunder
Oh every ladder
Leads to heaven
Colored pencils
Draw the picture
Sing your praises
As you're sleeping
Sing the changes
Any wonder
Feel the sense of
Childlike wonder
Sing your praises
As you're sleeping
Sing the changes
Oh as you're sleeping
Feel the quiet
In the thunder
Sing the changes
Calling over
Feel the quiet
In the thunder
Sing your praises
As you're sleeping
Feel the quiet
In the thunder
Sing the changes
Calling over
Everybody has a sense of
Childlike wonder
Sense of wonder
Sing your praises
As you're sleeping
Feel the quiet
In the thunder
Sing the changes
Calling over
Everybody has a sense of childlike wonder
