Things We Said Today

Beatles Things We Said Today
The "Things We Said Today" sleeve.

"Things We Said Today" was the flip side of the "A Hard Day's Night" single in many countries, including the United Kingdom, where it went to No. 1. In the United States, "Things We Said Today" was replaced with "I Should Have Known Better," where the single also went to No. 1.

Some have "Things We Said Today" as their favorite song from the "A Hard Day's Night" album. I wouldn't go that far, personally, but it a top, top track. Judging from concert footage, the ladies seemed to love it. Paul's vocals were never sharper, none of the fuzziness that sometimes creeps in, and the band is tight, especially with the famous harmonies.

Paul has said that he wrote "Things We Said Today" while on holiday in the Virgin Islands in May 1964:
I remember writing Things We Said Today in one of the cabins below deck one afternoon on my acoustic guitar. I got away from the main party but it was a bit queasy downstairs; you could smell the oil and the boat was rocking a bit and I'm not the best sailor in the world, so I wrote a little bit of it downstairs and then the rest of it on the back deck where you couldn't smell the engine. I don't know why the engine was on, I suppose we were moving.
Paul was with Jane Asher at the time on a couples date with Ringo and future wife Maureen (Starkey). The yacht's name was "Happy Days," very appropriate for a group at the peak of fame (and whose fame would never recede). The story goes that Paul composed "Things We Said Today" for the film "A Hard Day's Night," but that is probably stretching the truth a bit - he just composed it because he was in the mood to compose. In any event, "Things We Said Today" was not included in the "A Hard Day's Night" film, though it is on the soundtrack album.

Paul thinks the song is "interesting":
It was a slightly nostalgic thing already, a future nostalgia: we'll remember the things we said today, sometime in the future, so the song projects itself into the future and then is nostalgic about the moment we're living in now, which is quite a good trick. It has interesting chords.
Many fans would agree.
