The World Tonight

"The World Tonight" is one of Paul McCartney's singles from "Flaming Pie," his 1997 album that marked a strong turnaround in his fortunes. "The World Tonight" was the only single released from "Flaming Pie" in the United States." Released as a single with "Used to Be Bad," "The World Tonight" did reasonably well, peaking at No. 23 in the United Kingdom and No. 64 in the United States. While those may not seem like terrific peaks, "The World Tonight" was Paul's first single to chart at all in the United States since "Hope of Deliverance" in 1992 and his highest ranking single since "My Brave Face" in 1989. In fact, "The World Tonight" was McCartney's highest-charting single in the US during the entire decade of the 1990s and his highest there until the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" stunt single with U2 in 2005. Of course, McCartney's albums have done significantly better than his singles ("Flaming Pie" peaked at No. 2 in both the US and the UK) and have kept Paul in the recording studio when he's not touring.

Paul has said about "The World Tonight":
This one was written on an acoustic guitar when I was on holiday, so it started out folk-y. I don’t “go to work” to write songs, they just come when the mood strikes me and that’s usually when I’m on holiday, perhaps after a sail or a swim, when I’m chilling out and relaxing with a piano or a guitar. My studio manager, Eddie, usually expects me to bring home a couple of cassettes from a holiday.
There is a very retro feel to "The World Tonight." Paul recorded it on 13 November 1995 with Jeff Lynne. Supposedly "The World Tonight" is about Princess Diana, but it seems self-referential. Perhaps the most memorable thing about "The World Tonight" is that it includes the fine lyric, "I go back so far, I'm in front of me." Paul does go back pretty far, as "The World Tonight" was his fiftieth single.

"I'll tell them how I dreamt of a girl on a flaming pie who told me to call the band 'Beatles' with an 'A' and so it was." -John Lennon

I saw you sitting at the center of the circle
Everybody, everybody wanted something from you
I saw you sitting there

I saw you swaying to the rhythm of the music
Caught you playing,
caught you praying to the voice inside you
I saw you swaying there

I don't care what you want to be
I go back so far I'm in front of me!
It doesn't matter what they say
They're giving the game away

I can see the world tonight
Look into the future
See it in a different light
I can see the world tonight

I heard you listening to a secret conversation
You were crying,
you were trying not to let them hear you
I heard you listening in

Never mind what they want to do
You've got a right to your point of view!
It doesn't matter what they say
They're giving the game away

I can see the world tonight
Look into the future
See it in a different light
I can see the world tonight

I can see the world tonight

I saw you hiding from a flock of paparazzi
You were hoping,
you were hoping that the ground would swallow you
I saw you hiding there

I don't care what you want to be
I go back so far I'm in front of me!
It doesn't matter what they say
They're giving the game away

I can see the world tonight
Look into the future
See it in a different light
I can see the world tonight

Look into the future
I can see the world tonight
See it in a different light
I can see the world tonight
I can see the world tonight
