Paul Meets Katy Perry

Sir Paul and the Teenage Dream Girl

Paul still gets around. Here, Paul McCartney meets Katy Perry. All we can say is, some guys have all the luck! Paul and Katy met up at the Grammy Awards in February 2009.

Helter Skelter - 12-minute Beatles Version

Helter Skelter paulmccartney.filminspector.com
Helter Skelter.

Nobody needs me to tell them that The Beatles were terrific. However, the more you get into them, the more realize that their big radio hits were just the icing on the cake. And, here we have some of the meat of the cake as it were the Beatles' self-titled 1968 album more commonly known as the White Album.

The Beatles version of "Helter Skelter" is just mind-blowing in its precision and McCartney's ability to hit just the right tone with an extremely difficult vocal. Add in some terrific guitar work by George Harrison, the right deliberate pacing by Ringo, and Lennon chipping in some nice guitar work as well, and this is quite possibly the most towering Beatles song of them all.

When you realize that this was the same time that Paul was working up "Martha My Dear," you realize this is no ordinary talent at all. This is the birth of heavy metal to boot. That's right - "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles led directly to groups like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Kiss, and the career of Ozzy Osborne which took off with Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath, incidentally, formed in 1968, the same year that the Beatles released "Helter Skelter," but they did not head in the heavy metal direction until 1969.

Unfortunately, Paul no longer really has the voice for "Helter Skelter," and in any event, he rushes through the song in concert. The White Album version is fine, but this take just blows the album version away. Enjoy this leisurely tour through the song that is spot on, in a pristine recording.

Paul doing his sound-check at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee on 14 June 2013. This is interesting to me, not for the music, but simply due to the experience of walking in on Paul McCartney and his band at work.

Paul McCartney's 14 June 2013 appearance at the Bonnaroo Music Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee was a huge success. People who were there had a great time, and some said later that it was the greatest night of their lives.

Big international acts like McCartney don't often go to places off the beaten path like Manchester, Tennessee, so performing there was a rare treat for many fans in that part of the world. As usual, Paul played a long set, well over two hours in length, despite the presence of many other top acts such as ZZ Top, Wu-Tang Clan, and Wilco. All told, Paul pulled 24 Beatles classics and 7 Wings hits out of the vault and went through them with flawless perfection. The 80,000-or-so audience members responded well.

Here is a cute clip of Paul McCartney in Warsaw during his "Out There" tour. His drummer, Abe Laboriel Jr., doesn't really have that '60s spirit going on with the shirt and tie, but he's one of the best with his kit. The concert was at the National Stadium in Warsaw. June 22, 2013. The fans went wild, as they do at all of Paul's stops around the world.
