Fool On the Hill/ Lady Madonna - Fresno 4/13/2016

Paul McCartney One on One Tour paulmccartney.filminspector.com

Paul played 38 songs in Fresno on 13 April 2016, the opener of his One on One Tour. He always plays around that number, has for decades, will hopefully for decades more. Sure, the songs are fairly brief because he tends to adhere to the radio versions that everyone remembers rather than throw in extended guitar solos and jams like other (lesser) acts that can inflate a band's sole No. 1 hit to half an hour. Still, it shows that the man respects his audience and delivers.

Here, Paul McCartney sits and delivers "The Fool on the Hill" and "Lady Madonna." What's kind of funny is that he segued after this into his recent "Four Five Seconds" hit, which is some segue. However, that's the kind of legendary career Paul McCartney has had.

In Spite of All the Danger/ You Won't See Me

Paul McCartney One to One Tour paulmccartney.filminspector.com

After you've heard all the huge Beatles hits enough times, you like to have a go at some of the lesser-played tunes. These are the ones where you go, yeah, I love that little hook, such a classic. So, here we have a live performance of "In Spite of All the Danger" and "You Won't See Me," songs that I love because, more than the others, they transport me back to another time.

Anyway, I will be frank about this, it is not the best performance by Paul of either song, and not the best of the night (Fresno, April 13, 2016, One on One Tour). It is deep in the show, and Paul's voice is a touch ragged (as opposed to when he came out, when it was perfect).

However, it is excellent nonetheless to hear Paul's interpretation now of these mellow songs that get so little attention but really exemplify the core sound of the early Beatles beyond the "A Hard Day's Night" smashes..

Paul Does "Hard Day's Night" Live

Everybody knows that a lot of the Beatles classics were sung lead by John Lennon, and that distinctive sound can never be reproduced completely by anyone else. "A Hard Day's Night" is one of those songs. However, Paul gives it a go here on 13 April 2016 in Fresno, California, kicking off his One on One tour.

I've listened to a lot of renditions of this song, and it's extremely "hard" to get right. Paul does an absolutely magnificent job reproducing the sound. No, it is not John, but Paul obviously has worked on this and gotten the sound down pat. Obviously, his own middle 8 bit is spot on and nobody will ever do that better than him.

His voice is in excellent shape, though if it stays that way for his entire tour remains to be seen. He has a really seasoned backup band by now, he's actually been with these fellows longer than with anyone else, and the sound is about as perfect as you ever will get. It is a tribute band at this point, perhaps, but better than any other tribute band ever will be.

The Beatles (Paul and John) supposedly came up with this song in three hours. Ringo chipped in the title and they went from there. Paul had never performed this song live solo, and hadn't done it at all since San Francisco in '65. That's just amazing - the guy has not done this since 1965, and here it is 2016, over fifty years later. And he comes out and does it perfectly. How many people could ever say that about anything.

Nice job.
